A Message from the President . . .

Top

Dear NAWBO SFBA Community,

As President of the NAWBO SFBA Chapter, it has been an exciting year and an honor to speak and act on behalf of women, who own businesses. Women business owners are a force in the new economy – it is a new economy as things have changed, since the second great depression and the fastest growing segment of business start-ups is woman-owned.

As women, we bring a new culture of business that helps the economy, that creates jobs and serves many lives. These are exciting times to see women bringing different sets of values that are changing the landscape of business.

Studies show that while women are creating more businesses our revenue and job creation are lagging our male counter-parts. There are many reasons for this including our access to capital, access to markets, procurement opportunities, state and federal tax codes. Studies also show our thinking may be getting in our way.  For example most women use their own resources to fund their business.
NAWBO SFBA works to address these issues through public policy advocacy and development of educational programming. I invite you to take advantage of the upcoming opportunities we are creating for established and emerging businesses. Finance is not a sexy topic, but it is important for business owners. The more financially savvy we are, the more success we will be. There are several programs under development by NAWBO SFBA and our partners so watch for these and take advantage of the opportunities.

I want to thank our partner, Bank of America, for sponsoring an event for our members in May at the Maritime Museum. This was an exclusive event, an opportunity to meet business owners outside your usual network and to hear the newly released data from LinkedIn’s best practices study for business owners. I am still receiving emails of appreciation from those that attended.

As my term ends, I recommend that you become involved. You are a leader in your business already.  Your leadership is needed in other ways as well. Our leadership as women shows up differently for each of us. Find where your leadership can have an impact and step up into that role. In this way, we share and offer value in ways that make a difference beyond our business. The NAWBO tagline rings true Grow, Thrive and Lead.

Join us June 12th for the annual membership meeting and installation of the new board.  This Educational Speaker Series will appropriately be on Women Serving on Non-Profit and Corporate Boards: How to Lead, Elevate Your Positions with Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire & Alison Davis.

Thank you and best wishes on your success.
Kay Robinson
President, NAWBO SFBA

Women Serving on Non-Profit & Corporate Boards
How to Lead, Elevate Your Positions
Corporations are beginning to understand the importance of having women’s perspectives on their boards, as well as a part of their executive leadership. Studies have also shown that companies with women on their boards outperform companies whose boards have no women. However, even in light of these profound findings, only 16% of Fortune 500 board seats are held by women.

Join us for this informative panel on why women business owners should aspire to serve on corporate boards and to celebrate the women who offer their time and talents in the leadership of NAWBO SFBA.

About Speakers
Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire provides critical advice
for women navigating to their first board position,
as well as how companies can recruit the best
female board candidates. As the co-founder of
Berkhemer Clayton, Inc., she specializes in senior
level searches in communications, investor relations,
and board positions for corporations, universities
and nonprofits.Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire will be
officiating and signing her book “The Board Game”.
Alison Davis, one of the 2014 100 Most Influential
Woman – Honor Roll (SF Bus. Times) is the Managing
Partner of Fifth Era, which invests in and incubates
early stage technology enabled companies. She
serves on several non-profit and corporate boards,
incl. Diamond Foods, Royal Bank of Scotland, Unisys,
Women’s Initiative, among others.

BUSINESS NEWS YOU CAN USE . . .

It is important for women-owned businesses and firms to be able to export their products. Why? Studies have found that women-owned firms that export not only earn more, but also employ more people and are, on average, more productive than women-owned firms that do not. In addition, women-owned businesses that export their goods and services average $14.5 million in receipts, compared to just $117,036 for women-owned businesses that do not export. Clearly, exporting has very real advantages. | Learn More
