Message from the President

Kay RobinsonGender equity is not something that I’ve paid much attention to until recently.  Discussions about gender issues seem to be everywhere.  Last month I attended an informative event, Gender Equality Challenge: Rebuilding the 21st Century Workplace, supporting women in leadership positions.  And, of course, I’ve read Sheryl Sandberg’s comments about gender bias in her book, Lean In.

Several reports on the status of women business owners identify that gender bias continues to affect women’s access to capital. Women-owned businesses are 20% less likely to be approved for a loan according (Biz2Credit) and if granted receive 80% less than men (Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation).

Harvard Business School conducted a study this past year to find why women in their program were not faring as well as men.  ‘Turning around its record on women, the new administrators assured themselves, could have an untold impact at other business schools, at companies populated by Harvard alumni and in the Fortune 500, where only 21 chief executives are women. The institution would become a laboratory for studying how women speak in group settings, the links between romantic relationships and professional status, and the use of everyday measurement tools to reduce bias.’ The New York Times.

I was at an invitation-only event of 10 men and three women with interest in the status of small businesses in San Francisco.  The sponsor was pleased to have women at the table but it was also clear that we were not part of the conversation, similar to what women experienced in the MBA program in the study at Harvard.

Finally, TechCrunch Disrupt conference in SF received a lot of press this week for frat boyish behavior without regard for the women in the conference.

Gender GEDI concludes that social and cultural norms still to be less conducive for women to become entrepreneurs.  It is easy for us to focus on our businesses where we have control of the values and the environment in which we work.  On the other hand, we interact with the whole community and are impacted by the ever so subtle views and actions of others. It is so much part of the fabric of our culture that I dare say we don’t notice and accept subtle and not so subtle biases.

Regulations around federal contracting, selecting first and second tier providers, funding decisions, awarding contracts, etc., are all ways in which bias can impact a women-owned business.

As women business owners we clearly do not have a problem with being determined and focused on creating our success.  We are, however, subtly affected by the biases that still exist in awarding contracts, granting loans, securing VC funding and other instances where we depend on the recognition of others.  The change begins with us.  We must open our eyes and recognize bias, comment on it and expect it to change. Are we focused on eliminating gender bias in our own businesses?  It is our goal to work to assure that women have a level playing field on which to create their success.  Do your part.

Best wishes on your success,

Kay

Carolyn PistoneCarolyn Pistone, a Committed Earthling

By Melody Brumis of Write on Time Solutions

Two years ago, Carolyn Pistone both started her latest business endeavor, Green Key Commercial, and joined NAWBO SF. She says she couldn’t have done one without the other. Carolyn, a self-described committed earthling, is dedicated to saving the planet using her real estate license! At Green Key Commercial, she applies a holistic and sustainable approach to all facets of the life of a property: purchase, leasing, facility management, tenant representation, and sale (purchase by a new owner).

Carolyn is a proud REALTOR®, EcoBroker®, and Certified Green Building Professional®. She is working to build a supportive, innovative, and collaborative environment for clients, vendors, team members, and, yes, even the planet, to thrive. She shares highlights of her first two years in business in a blog post: http://www.greenkeycommercial.com/events/happy-birthday-green-key-commercial/

An active NAWBO SF member, Carolyn attends both the monthly dinners and San Francisco’s breakfast forums. “I came as a guest,” Carolyn said about her first NAWBO event, “and joined the second I knew I would be open for business.” She shared the highlights of her two year membership. “NAWBO has given me a peer group, fellowship, boosters, mentors, and access to some of the finest feminine business wisdom available.  It has been wonderful to be able to speak candidly and with pride with my NAWBO sisters and to celebrate our wins and face our challenges with honesty and bravery.”

When asked what she does for fun, Carolyn replied: “After a few years of cheering from the sidelines, I was finally inspired to put my running shoes back on and can be found on weekends trying to shave a few seconds off my 5K race time.”

You can meet up with Carolyn at Green Key Commercial, a NAWBO event, or the local race track.

Public Policy

SCR 62 Passed both State Senate and Assembly!

Great News on the success of Betsy Berkhemer-Credaire (Past President NAWBO-CA and NAWBO-LA, currently NAWBO-CA CP Chair)! Betsy has been championing resolution SCR-62 on behalf of NAWBO to make sure there are women on boards.  http://nawbo-sfba.org/public-policy.php

Women Business Owners are Leading Indicators

Despite the challenging economic time of the last few years, women-owned businesses are thriving.   That is not to say they we don’t have work to do - the majority are clustered in lower average revenue industries and other statistics show us still facing obstacles. This and other information can be found in a new info graphic released by The National Women’s Business Council illustrating the significant economic clout of women-led businesses.

  • Women-owned firms produce employment for more than 23 million people in the United States, or 16% of our 2008 workforce.
  • Approximately 8% of the total labor force work directly for a woman-owned firm.
  • There are 175 countries with less population than the number women- owned firms employ (directly and indirectly); there are 150 countries with less population than the number of people women-owned firms employ directly!
  • If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, they would have the 5th largest GDP in the world, trailing closely behind Germany, and ahead of countries including France, United Kingdom and Italy.
  • If U.S.-based women-owned businesses were their own country, they would have a greater GDP than Canada, India and Vietnam combined.
  • Bottom line: Women-owned businesses have an economic impact of nearly $3 trillion.

Here at NAWBO we keep this momentum going by promoting economic development within the entrepreneurial community and building alliances to other small business organizations.  In the public policy arena we influence opinion makers in favor of legislation supporting women-owned business.  By working together we grow and thrive as business owners.
