Message from the President

Kay RobinsonThis past month I had the opportunity to engage in several conversations related to women owned businesses.  Issues discussed are important to all of us.  The first was a seminar on Gender Equality in the Workplace sponsored by the SF Department on the Status of Women attended by myself and two other board members, Syndi Seid and Shannon Presson.  The topic raises questions for women business owners.  Are we making our best effort to promote women to leadership positions in our own companies?  Does gender bias exist in our business?  This is a time to take an honest look in this regard.

The National Women Business Council, advisory council to the President, Congress and the SBA, held their quarterly meeting in SF. Myself, Board Members, Julie White and Syndi Seid, along with NAWBO members, Laura Renner and Carolyn Pistone represented our chapter.  We listened with interest as the council presented their annual report and focused on changes women need to make in our perspective to scale our businesses in revenue, size and profitability.  You can find a link to their report on our website.

I attended the East Bay Economic Development Alliance Conference where Kish Rajan, Director of the Governor’s new Department of Business Economic Development presented.  I asked Kish what efforts his department was making to address the unique challenges facing women business owners.  Admitting that they had not begun that work, he showed interest in working with NAWBO to begin to identify strategies for CA.

After attending these events and others this month on behalf of NAWBO it became clear to me that for our businesses to have the best opportunity and environment to succeed we have to be involved in conversations that affect our businesses.  It is clear that everyone wants women at the table but being heard takes determination and persistence.  NAWBO SFBA will do our part to speak on behalf of women business owners but your voice is needed as well.  I encourage you to find opportunities to talk to us about your business needs at events.  Be heard.   Your voice does make a difference.  There are many organizations that speak on your behalf but it is not enough.  Become engaged in issues that matter to you and your unique situation.

Being involved with NAWBO is one way you can be heard.  Attend our events and engage other women in conversation.  Our September Educational Speaker Series features Jory des Jardin, one of the founders of BlogHer.  She has a great deal to say about the voice of women.  Please join us.

Best wishes on your success,
Kay Robinson
President, NAWBO SFBA

Dr. Lisa Brent Marin Natural Medicine Clinic

Dr. Lisa BrentIf you’ve attended a Marin Breakfast Forum in the last year, you may have had the opportunity to meet Dr. Lisa Brent. Lisa is a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist who works out of the Marin Natural Medicine Clinic in Larkspur. A naturopathic doctor, according to Lisa, is a primary care physician who uses natural therapies for acute and chronic illnesses and disease prevention. Lisa is also a licensed acupuncturist and says, “Everyone can benefit from acupuncture.” She uses it for stress reduction, sleep improvement, and to overcome digestive issues and body pain.

What she likes most about her profession is helping women. “I love helping women find their own inner vitality,” Lisa explains. She encourages them to create a balance of work and family life. Lisa has been in practice for over 13 years. Starting in Portland, Oregon, she later set up shop in Santa Barbara, and in 2008 moved to the Bay Area.

Recently, Lisa has introduced a fertility enhancement program for women and couples who are trying to conceive. She starts early to improve the woman’s health by using a multifaceted program of good nutrition, acupuncture, and intravenous (IV) therapy. IV therapy is a way of replenishing lost vitamins and minerals quickly and easily without having to take a large amount of oral supplements. For more information, go to www.drlisabrent.com.

Besides being a physician, Lisa says she has an “unpaid job” taking care of her three small children. Lisa lives in Marin with her husband David, a construction consultant, Eva 9, Julian 6, and Alma 4. In her free time, Lisa likes to garden, do yoga, and hike.

Lisa was introduced to NAWBO by fellow Marin NAWBO member, Toni Galardi. She attended her first breakfast forum and immediately joined SF NAWBO. She likes that NAWBO members support one another. She’s found everyone she’s met at NAWBO to be “supportive, authentic, powerful, and interesting.”

Thanks Lisa for taking the time to tell us about you and your business.

HOW PASSION, PURPOSE AND POINT OF VIEW CAN CREATE A BUSINESS THAT IMPACTS THE WORLD

As women entrepreneurs, you’re focused on the “how-to’s” of building, optimizing, promoting and delegating in your businesses. But as you grow, your perspective of what matters grows as well. You begin to ask yourself “how do I want to impact the world, now that I know what I am capable of. How do I hold sight of this bigger vision while still running my business, paying my employees and managing my profit and loss?”

September 24 - Creating Connection While Thinking on Your Feet with Lisa Safran

As a small business owner we often wear many hats including “Director of Networking, Sales, and Marketing.” While all of us bring incredible talents to the services we provide, the idea of networking, sales, and marketing are sometimes daunting to say the least. Being able to quickly and spontaneously share about our business or expertise in a way that will intrigue the listener is essential. Equally important is our ability to actively listen to what others are saying. Improvisation a growing trend in 2013 will support building and moving those important relationships forward!

Lisa Safran, owner of ImprovConsultants will guide you through several exercises to support being able to think on your feet and listen in an authentic way.
