August Message from the President

Kay Robinson(Below is the installation statement by our new President, Kay Robinson)

I have worked in support of women my whole life.  The first feminist activity that had an impact on me was in Girls Scouts.  Our scout leader wanted us to know what we really wanted and not just fall into routines typical of girls.  With that encouragement we chose to do deep back woods camping, which was challenging and empowering.  The other choice we made was to create a rifle club. We wanted to learn to shoot rifles because where I came from all the boys had rifles for hunting and we wanted to know what all the fuss was about so we took our curiosity to a rifle range.

When thirteen girsl showed up at the rifle range for the first time the men were aghast!

How do I hold sight of this bigger vision while still running my business, paying my employees and managing my profit and loss?”

August 27 - Three Secrets To Making Hiring Easy

Most Hiring decisions are less effective that a coin toss.

Laura RennerA coin toss? We spend so much time and energy looking for the right person to join our team when we could just flip a coin to get the same results. Yet, there is a way to improve your odds.

Everyone knows the basics of hiring you post an opening, look at resumes, interview the people with the most impressive resumes and voila you have a new team member. Within each step, business owners use various methods to try to weed out the superstars from the duds. But our dismal success rate at best paralyzes us into making a decision and at worst predics that we will spend wasted productivity, energy, money and time addressing a low-performing team member.

In this session, you will learn three good and easy methods to making smart hiring decisions that will propel your team and your company to the next level.

Laura works with business owners and leaders to help them make smart hiring decisions. She helps them to develop their hiring stategies and systematize their hiring process, making it easy for them and ensuring the new hires stick around. Laura was previously in HR and has an international MBA.

Public Policy

Tax Reform Affects All of Us

In an attempt to understand how the small business community feels about tax reform, the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship chaired by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) held a roundtable entitled “Small Business Tax Reform: Making the Tax Code Work for Entrepreneurs and Startups." WIPP's Chief Advocate, Ann Sullivan was invited by the Committee to participate to ensure that the voice of women-owned business was a part of this incredibly important discussion. In her remarks, she said that a majority of WIPP members would rather have a lower tax rate than any of the 20+ deductions and credits that currently exist in the tax law. She discussed the importance of a tax code, that if rewritten, is simple and fair. WIPP believes that businesses should be treated the same regardless of their business designation both in the tax rate and the credits or deductions available to them. Read More.
